Mouth Violin Kni Fretless

The K'ni is a traditional mouth-resonating string instrument of the Giaray people of Vietnam, in which a single vibrating string is bowed to produce sound that resonates within the player's oral cavity. This fretless version allows continuous pitch variation and expressive tonal shaping through changes in mouth volume and embouchure.

Construction and Playing Method

The instrument consists of a bamboo body with a single string activated by a bamboo bow. A small round plate positioned at one end of the string is placed behind the teeth during play, serving as the acoustic coupling point between the vibrating string and the mouth cavity.

Sound production depends on the resonance chamber formed by the player's mouth. By altering the volume and shape of the oral cavity, the player modulates pitch, timbre and dynamic response. The fretless design enables smooth glissandi and vibrato effects characteristic of Giaray musical expression.

Preparing the Instrument

The bamboo bow requires rosin treatment before first use to generate sufficient friction on the string. Rosin is not included with the instrument and must be sourced separately. A horsehair bow is available as an optional accessory for players seeking alternative tonal qualities or durability characteristics.

What's Included

  • Mouth Violin Kni Fretless
  • Bamboo bow

Fretless, it allows fluid slides between notes and expressive vibrato effects characteristic of Giaray music. Handcrafted in bamboo by Clemens Voigt & Sven Otto GbR, it suits both beginners and experienced musicians seeking to explore unique sound textures for solo performances, world music ensembles, or film scores.
