Lamellaphones

Lamellaphones

The lamellophones constitute a typically African instrument family that enchants with their crystalline and soothing sound.

At Rhythms & Roots, discover authentic kalimbas, mbiras, sanzas and other thumb pianos.

These metal-tined instruments offer a unique musical experience, accessible to all.

History and African traditions

Originally from sub-Saharan Africa, these instruments have accompanied rituals, ceremonies and moments of sharing for millennia. Each region has developed its own variants, with specific tunings and repertoires. Their artisanal manufacture perpetuates ancestral traditions.

Operating principle

The principle is simple: flexible metal tines are fixed on a wooden resonance box. The musician plucks these tines with their thumbs to produce crystalline notes. The arrangement of the tines follows melodic and harmonic logics specific to each tradition.
